University of Virginia Health System Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center

This clinical cancer center delivers comprehensive cancer care in an advanced facility that is easily accessible and fully integrates research in a patient-friendly environment. To reposition its existing, academic medical campus-based building, UVA undertook an extensive renovation process to address operational improvements, expand key outpatient diagnostic and treatment services, and promote a welcoming and accessible destination healthcare experience. Specific project components included a new USP-800 pharmacy, clinic space, staff support space, and inviting lobby features like an open stair and new rooftop terrace to enhance the arrival sequence.

The centerpiece of the renovation was a large-scale, advanced, LEED certified 54-bay infusion center. Both private infusion bays and living rooms, comprised of four open bays, are arranged in neighborhoods with a decentralized staffing model that is flexible to adapt to real-time needs of patient volumes and treatment cycles. Taking better advantage of natural light, the neighborhoods are located around the building’s perimeter. To maximize views, a sloping ceiling system in the infusion living rooms captures all the glazed area in the curtain wall while providing space above the ceiling for the necessary building systems.

The dramatic transformation, both physical and operational, promotes a patient- and staff-focused approach to care and empowers UVA in achieving its goals of serving its community.
