Who We Are

After moving to the Washington, DC area from Omaha, NE in the middle of a February snowstorm, John Wilmot, FAIA founded our specialized healthcare design firm on the principles of high quality work and tireless client service.

The firm won its first major hospital project – an emergency department and patient bed tower with Arnot Ogden Medical Center. We continue to work with this client decades later and, in 2015, completed a vertical expansion of that same building.

Part of the first class of students at the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Rolando Sanz began working at the firm as a summer intern.

The firm experienced tremendous growth, doubling in size and working with many new hospital clients throughout the nation.

John Wilmot partnered with his son, Jim Wilmot, and Rolando Sanz to guide the firm to new heights adding a new generation of healthcare design leadership.

A small radiology renovation was Wilmot Sanz’s first project on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. A quarter century later, we have designed more than two thirds of the campus’s more than three million square feet of built space.

Our first project for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. We take pride in developing long-term relationships with our clients built on trust and service. Today, we have designed several high-profile buildings on the East Baltimore site and dozens more across the health system’s affiliated hospital and outpatient campuses.

A fresh start. Continuing to expand to serve our long-term healthcare clients, we outgrew our old home. The firm moved to a new suite, with workstations arranged collaboratively in pods for each of our client teams.

We were deeply saddened to unexpectedly lose a partner, mentor, and friend in Jim Wilmot in January. The firm continues to celebrate his memory through various charitable donations and engagement with the community.

With six partners, a growing, talented staff, and over a dozen client relationships spanning more than a decade, Wilmot Sanz is the leading healthcare design firm in the Mid-Atlantic United States. As we celebrate a half century of success, we are excited for our next 50 years of innovations and milestones.

The firm transitioned seamlessly to a work from home environment during the global pandemic, continuing to deliver expert client service to our healthcare clients in a virtual environment.

The firm elevated Kristen DelGandio, long time employee and Design Director leading our interior design practice to Partner. Kristen joins the leadership team of Greg Chang, Jim Curran and Rick Sasaki in bringing fresh energy to lead the firm into the next decades of modern healthcare design.

From our new modern office space in Rockville, MD - the firm continues to grow and adapt to the changing healthcare marketplace in servicing our clients by providing interior fit outs, master planning and programming, and architectural design for healthcare systems across all scales. We partner with premier health institutions to offer the best built environments for patient care.
