In 2019, the University of Maryland Capital Regional Health embarked on a process to redevelop the Laurel Regional Hospital campus to shift its focus from inpatient to outpatient care and services. Patients requiring a higher level of acute care can go to the regional flagship hospital in Largo, but maintaining a presence in Laurel will provide many services that the community needs right in its own backyard.
The system can now provide access to primary and specialty medical care, behavioral health, outpatient surgery and emergency care through the new Laurel Medical Center, which opened its doors this past week.
Wilmot Sanz provided architectural and interior design services for the new 84,000 square foot building that spans two floors, is set in a park-like campus and offers patients outpatient services and 24/7 emergency care.
The medical center’s first-floor entrance leads into a surgery center and offices for physicians and specialists which provide internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and pain management services. Warm lobby and waiting areas welcome patients and families, while a grab and go café provides nourishing snacks and touchdown spaces for visitors and staff.
In addition to the new 20-bed emergency department, a 10-bed observation unit is located adjacent to the ED. Patients can be transferred to this unit from the emergency room if they need additional monitoring.
To meet the public health needs of the community and maintain a safe environment for patients and staff, the medical center offers a range of behavioral health services. Dedicated treatment space in the emergency department creates a safe space for these patients and an outpatient clinic offers counseling and rehabilitative care services.
The medical center also includes a radiology department, a pharmacy, procedure rooms and two operating suites.
The new Laurel Medical Center marks the completion of Phase I of a multi-year plan to create a health and wellness destination for the Laurel community.
