Modernization and expansion of an urban hospital on the Brandywine River

Christiana Care's downtown Wilmington campus is located on an urban site along the Brandywine River. The proposed additions and renovations will transform the hospital as many of the key clinical departments are modernized.

Significant project elements include an iconic gateway building along the Brandywine River and new departments for surgery, SPD, and emergency. The clinical departments will also serve as the base for a new 90-bed patient tower.

Circulation patterns have been completely redesigned to separate the public from emergency traffic and allow the redevelopment of the existing internal autocourt into a healing garden and atrium.

Sustainable design strategies include the use of local and renewable resources such as brick and high-fly-ash concrete. These strategies take advantage of Wilmington's location close to major manufacturing facilities in the Delaware River region.
