Eye care and research building
The Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins Hospital has established a world class reputation as a premier medical research and patient eye care center.
Its first floor features the six-OR Maurice Bendann Surgical Pavilion and is dedicated entirely to outpatient eye surgery, with the remaining floors housing laboratories. Previously spread throughout several buildings on campus, Wilmer’s researchers are now consolidated into one modern, 211,500-SF facility, promoting collaboration between clinical and research staff.
The building’s brick exterior was designed to reflect the character of the surrounding buildings on the campus of Johns Hopkins Hospital and in East Baltimore.
The most striking design feature is the glass paneling that soars above the main entrance. Carefully positioned, these glass panels mirror the octagonal Wilmer Dome, marking the Institute’s original, historic location. The dome is also visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows in the board room and staff conference rooms on each of the facility’s floors.
This project followed our development of the master plan for Wilmer Eye Institute. Master Planning: Wilmer Eye Institute
